July 31, 2004 – The Santa Clara County Open Space Authority announced the
opening of its first open space preserve:
Rancho Canada del Oro Open Space Preserve.
Tucked into
the western foothills of Santa Clara County, Rancho Canada del Oro Open Space
Preserve boasts beautiful oak woodlands, native grassland areas, and spectacular
scenic views. The Open Space
Authority’s goal of preservation, protection, and management is evident as the
2,800-acre preserve carefully balances limited public access with preservation
of sensitive serpentine habitat, watershed, and riparian
zones.
“We’re excited
about opening the preserve and being able to offer the public a chance to
experience the unique beauty that exists at Rancho Canada del Oro,” said General
Manager, Patrick Congdon.
Located
adjacent to Santa Clara County Parks’ Calero Park, Rancho Canada del Oro Open
Space Preserve is host to two trails; Longwall Canyon Trail (2.7 miles) and Bald
Peaks Trail (1.1 miles). The trails can only be accessed from Calero County
Parks’ Bald Peaks Trail or Serpentine Loop Trail and are open to hikers and
equestrians. The new preserve will
be open to visitors from dawn to dusk.
