Summer Under the Sun Program

Amigos de Guadalupe Center for Justice and Empowerment

About the Project

Amigos de Guadalupe's Summer Under the Sun program is a five-week, thematic, hands-on summer learning experience for K-8 students in East San José. This year's theme, Earthkeepers/ Guardianes del Planeta, focuses on environmental education, climate resilience and core academic skills through fun, place-based learning. Designed for low-income and unhoused children and youth, the program blends environmental stewardship, science exploration, math and literacy instruction, creative arts and social-emotional learning so that students strengthen skills while connecting with nature around them. Students gain practical knowledge about the environmental world around them, local climate issues and how to become environmental champions in their own way - while strengthening reading comprehension, writing, problem-solving and numeracy through standards-aligned lessons. By equipping underserved youth with the knowledge and skills to protect their environment and succeed academically, Summer Under the Sun strengthens community climate resilience for generations to come.
