CommUniverCity's Growing Sustainability Plan

San José State University Research Foundation

About the Project

“You taught me how to plant, [now] I can plant [flowers] whenever I want to."

Third grade student , Olinder Elementary School

Growing Sustainably aims to increase urban food system awareness and engagement, reduce access barriers to natural spaces, and raise environmental literacy in low-income, Central San Jose communities. Led by CommUniverCity, and with funds from the Open Space Authority, over 2,000 residents (students and families) learned about urban agriculture and environmental science through hands-on lessons, field trips and family education kits. They gardened at schools and home, visited an urban farm and enjoyed San José 's Kelley Park.
