Environmental Justice & Sustainability Field Trips

Russo McEntee Academy

About the Project

Russo/McEntee Academy, a Title I elementary school in East San José, serves a highly vulnerable community disproportionately affected by poverty, disability and the climate crisis. Since 2021, the school was redesigned with a focus on Environmental Justice and Sustainability and an emphasis on social-emotional learning. One of the key components of their program is field trips, through which they teach California State Standards and Next Generation Science Standards, while also significantly enhancing parent engagement and student social-emotional learning. This model has proven transformative, helping students develop both scientific knowledge and agency as climate stewards. This grant project provides continuity for the school and community to access natural areas beyond June 2026.
