Accessible Urban Gardening

Valley Verde

About the Project

Valley Verde's San José Food Sovereignty Project supports urban agriculture and environmental education in underserved neighborhoods by providing families intensive support to learn to grow fresh, healthy, culturally relevant produce. In collaboration with residents and schools, they create and maintain vibrant urban gardens, provide a curriculum based on environmentally sustainable gardening methods and nutrition, foster community building and environmental leadership and increase access to urban green space. Families participate for a minimum of six months, which gives them a strong foundation in growing their own food for the long-term and, ultimately, builds a local food system that supports healthy ecosystems. The project will expand on Valley Verde's successful ongoing work by making the programs more accessible for seniors and people with disabilities.
