Máyyan 'Ooyákma – Coyote Ridge

On Saturday, August 8, the 32-acre Malech Fire broke out shortly before noon, prompting the closure of Máyyan 'Ooyákma - Coyote Ridge Open Space Preserve.

Staff responded immediately, ensuring the preserve was evacuated and closed to the public. 

Thanks to rapid response from Santa Clara County Fire, CalFire Santa Clara Unit and San Jose Fire Department, the fire was contained quickly. As a result, no one was hurt and no structures were damaged. 

Although the incident was intense, it was wonderful to see how all the various agencies, including the Open Space Authority, came together to not only protect the land but the public as well.

The Authority also highlights the important role its conservation grazing program played in reducing the intensity of the fire. Recent grazing reduced dry vegetation, one of the primary goals of fuel-reduction grazing. This helped slow the fire’s spread and prevented it from becoming more destructive, giving firefighters critical time and space to contain it quickly.

Máyyan 'Ooyákma - Coyote Ridge Open Space Preserve is temporarily closed to support mop-up operations.
