The Authority contributed funds to the Santa Clara County Creeks Coalition for their Santa Clara County Creeks Coalition's Coyote Creek Homeless Stream Stewards Trash Free Coyote Creek project where they worked in collaboration with Friends of Coyote Creek Watershed and other volunteer groups and public agencies to achieve a trash free creek within the 10 mile stretch between Yerba Buena Road in South San Jose and Tasman Drive in North San Jose. Project coordinators worked with the homeless who reside along the creek by having them participate in the program. Over 100,000 pounds of trash was gathered in bags, removed from the creek, and hauled to a suitable sanitary landfill.
Growing Sustainably, a signature CommUniverCity SJSU program, is developing and delivering new curriculum connecting wildlife appreciation, Green STEM careers, and climate resilience to expand its programming. It is teaching 905 Central San Jose k-8th grade students living in underserved communities about local flora and fauna through urban habitat gardening. Additionally, the program is organizing grade level-appropriate environmental science career fairs using hands-on activities and field trips. Central San Jose program participants have multiple opportunities to garden, observe wildlife, learn about green STEM careers, visit the SJSU campus, enjoy natural areas, and address environmental issues relevant to them.
Veggielution's Urban Grower Network is a response to the need for community-based food and environmental organizations to better coordinate themselves around specific work and projects, to grow our collective impact. The Urban Grower Network initiative offers a unique opportunity for a committed group of grassroots environmental education and urban agriculture agencies, and the community members we serve, to build relational trust and connections. The organization is developing a strategic plan to build a collaborative model for enhancing access to healthy food through urban farms and gardens and developing environmental education programs and facilities throughout Santa Clara County. The Urban Grower Network aims to meet present needs and reimagine our food system to be more equitable, resilient, and sustainable for the future.
